TOURNAMENT HISTORY

According to Warren Buffet…. “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago”.

This quote nicely describes the history of the Heart of the Hills Golf Tournament! The “tree” that was planted in the late 1930’s was an amateur golf tournament -- held annually in Kerrville -- the "Heart of the Texas Hill Country".  Today we sit in the shade of the HOH tree and enjoy the golf and the fellowship that make this tournament such a fun and enjoyable week.

Through the Years: The HOH Tournament has been a well-known and respected amateur golf tournament contested in Kerrville Texas.  Since its inception, the tournament has been played at the Scott Schreiner Golf Course (SSGC) in Kerrville, Texas. Today the SSGC layout is an 18-hole, 6,453-yard, Par 70 course which is operated by the City of Kerrville. SSGC is widely recognized as one of the State’s best municipally owned / operated courses.

75 and Counting!  The 2021 HOH marked the 75th Anniversary for the tournament.  We are looking forward to the 2022 tournament -- the 76th edition of the HOH.  The tournament is going strong -- and rounding the corner to 100 years!!

Tournament Facts and Notes:

  • The tournament was first contested in 1939, then resumed in 1946 -- following World War II.

  • The tournament has averaged 200+ players per year -- since the SSGC course renovation in 1999.

  • The Heart of the Hills draws one of the largest fields of any amateur golf  tournament in Texas.

  • Historically, more than 50% of the participants come from outside of Kerr County.  Many players and teams come from out-of-State -- and return year after year.

  • Many players use the HOH as a vacation, benefitting Kerrville area businesses with lodging at area hotels, dining out at local restaurants, retail shopping in and around Kerrville, and visiting area destinations and attractions.

  • With visitors and locals participating in the tournament -- and spending "Kerr-Bucks" with area businesses -- the tournament has a real benefit to the local economy!

  • Heart of the Hills Golf Tournament Committee was formed in 1986.  This marked the point the tournament settled on the current flighted two-man partnership format.

  • Guy Cullins, SSGC’s long-time head professional, directed the tournament from 1986–2013.  Guy set high standard for the tournament and the HOH committee. This standard continues today with year-round planning to assure the tournament is well organized, fun, and competitive.

  • In 2015, the HOH formally became the Heart of the Hills Golf Association. A non-profit 501c (6) corporation of Texas -- with a mission of supporting youth golf in the Texas Hill Country.

  • Today the Heart of the Hills Golf tournament committee members are…Steven Lynch, Jimmy Peschel, Ned Brown, Dale Cloud, Rowdy Key, Kenny and Debbie Minter, Sam Braswell and Kelli Lemmons.

  • The HOH Golf Association provides support to local high school golf programs and other local programs.

We appreciate all of our players and all our sponsors!

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the 76th HOH!
